Art workshop

In this workshop, local textile artist and renowned natural dye expert Deborah Gray will introduce you to botanical printing.

You will learn how to print colours hidden within plants directly from leaves or flowers on to fabric and paper which you can take home for your own craft projects – or to hang on the wall. Each botanical print is a unique one-off artwork.

Pre-mordanted materials and all equipment will be supplied. Please note that the process can be messy, so wearing old clothes or an apron is recommended.

Deborah will also be displaying examples of botanical printing at The Rockfield Centre during ArtMap (19 – 29 August, 10-4, except Wednesday) and doing live dyeing demonstrations. You may find more information here.

Duration – 4 hours (including a break)

Maximum 12 participants

Not suitable for young children, teens only if accompanied by a responsible adult

Your Tutor Deborah Gray is a textile artist based in Oban. Deborah’s recent work examines the links between land(scape), the natural materials (fibre, plants) which grow there, and the work created from those materials which reflects elements of the land(scape). Techniques include spinning, natural dyeing, knitting, botanical printing and stitch, with photographic documentation. She is Lead Practitioner for the EcoCreative Cluster dye garden project at The Rockfield Centre, developing a dye garden and programme of natural dyeing workshops (with co-Lead Naoko Mabon) as well as building a network of local and international practitioners focusing on the use of natural dyes and related practices.

Deborah is an experienced teacher of spinning, natural dyeing and knitting techniques and has been Artist-in-Residence at The Icelandic Textile Centre, Blönduós, NorthWest Iceland in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
